The Mission Impossible Machine is an alternative Kit Kat vending machine that I helped create at Jack the Maker in Lisbon, Portugal. We built a system of adjustable lasers, mirrors, and sensors that were installed inside a small black room to create a mission impossible-type game in which players can win a free Kit Kat bar if they complete the circuit.
A custom-built Kit Kat vending machine sits at the end of the room with two red buttons at the start and finish of the circuit. Once a player enters the room and presses the first button, the lasers are switched on and the vending machine begins counting down the remaining time in the game. A random selection of the nine lasers reflected off of mirrors creates a difficult and unpredictable circuit. If the disruption of a laser beam is detected by the sensors, the player loses.
The installation included live-streaming of the event and a sitting area outside the room in which passersby could watch the game being played. It was installed at three music festivals across Portugal in summer 2017.
